Washington State has instituted significant changes in the law governing rental housing. Many of those changes comport with the existing Seattle laws, but Seattle has undergone its own changes in laws governing rental housing. Below are a few of the recent changes in light of COVID recovery measures.

As the COVID related eviction moratoriums are evolving to an eventual conclusion, Washington State is facing an overall change in rental laws, as well as the recovery from delayed or unpaid rental payments during this public health emergency.

Pending the final end to the moratoriums, Governor Inslee has issued Proclamation 21-09 in order to “bridge” the time gap between the end of the moratoriums and the effectiveness of transitioning through this recovery.

Governor Inslee signed SB 5034 replacing the nonprofit statutes for the first time in 50 years. The Washington Nonprofit Corporation Act (“New Act”) will take effect on January 1, 2022 and will have a significant impact within the nonprofit sector.
